Leer la historia

The Tower of Karkadiotissa was located on a small hill east and just opposite the current village of Karkadiotissa in the province Temenos . It was built on a site that overlooks the entire valley formed between the mountains of Houdetsi and Kasteriotis , has visual contact with the southern part of Giouchtas and Roka in Profitis Ilias , and a small part of the city of Heraklion .

From the Tower of Karkadiotissa today, only one wall 8 meters high is preserved, while the rest of the traces of the building are either buried under the ground, or have been destroyed by the plowing of the soil. The tower dates back to the Venetian era and is reminiscent of the tower in Damania .

It was probably used by the local feudal lord to oversee his lands. During the Ottoman occupation of the island, when Kardakiotissa was inhabited by Muslims, the tower was probably used to protect the inhabitants from revolutionary actions.

The access to the tower is possible through a dirt road that starts from the main road that leads to the Monastery of Epanosifis , next to the last houses of the village. The road leads to a sheepfold, just before the tower.

You will have to walk a few meters from the sheepfold.
