Church of the Holy Apostles at Agios Mironas

The Church of the Holy Apostles (Agii Apostoli) Peter and Paul is located at the neighbourhood Abobadena in the village Agios Myronas and is a single-nave vaulted church bearing frescoes with intense funeral subjects. It is the only Cretan church in which the frescoes were painted on cloth ( canvas ), later pasted on the walls of the temple.

This technique was used by Italian artists of the 16th century. Similarly in the frescoes have obvious western influences with strong dramatic elements.

Especially in the Epitaph mourning, a female figure sitting next to Christ mourns with her right hand on her face and her left raised, while a second one rests on her head side. In the Palpation of Thomas the intense agitation of the Apostles is not found in the Cretan School of Hagiography , as well as the big number of angels of the Second Coming.

It is obvious that the wall paintings have been painted by an artist from West Europe, maybe Italian, with good knowledge of post-Byzantine art.
