Church of Saint John the Baptist at Anogia

In the neighborhood of Kavalaria in Armi , Anogia , there is the imposing double-aisled church of Saint John the Baptist (Agios Ioannis Prodromos) and Virgin Mary (Panagia). Inside there is an impressive wood-carved iconostasis with relief details.

Externally the temple has undergone significant interventions that have altered its original form, such as the bell tower. The south aisle bears frescoes of the early 14th century, following a folk-style technique.

The iconographic program includes scenes from the Christological cycle, the life of Saint John the Baptist and various Saints. Interesting are the depictions of Our Lady of Glycofiloussa ( sweet kissing ), the poet Saint Kosmas, the scenes from the Passion of Christ and the Crucifixion, where the church is presented as a person collecting blood from the wound of Christ.
