Back to newsCommemorative events marking the Battle of Crete took place in Souda, on the island's northern coast near Chania, with British Princess Anne in attendance. The Battle of Crete (May 20-June 1, 1941) was one of World War II's most significant airborne invasions, during which Allied forces and Cretan civilians resisted the German paratroop assault. Souda Bay Commonwealth War Cemetery, where over 1,500 Allied soldiers are buried, serves as the focal point for annual remembrance ceremonies held each May. The cemetery is open to visitors year-round and is located a short drive from Chania city center. These events draw diplomatic delegations, veterans' descendants, and locals, reflecting the deep respect Cretans still hold for the Allied soldiers who fought alongside them. Visitors to the area are welcome to pay their respects at the cemetery.
