After the great Cretan Revolution of 1866 , the Turks built more than 100 towers, called kouledes , to control the rebels. At the eastern edge of the valley of Amari , two such koules were built, the koules of Vathiakos and Lochria .
The koule of Vathiakos , built on the hill south of the village, served a dual purpose. First, it controlled the passages from Amari to Messara .
Secondly, it strongly protected the Muslim village Vathiakos , which was the Turkish center of the area. The koule of Vathiako still survives in relatively good condition.
Its east wall has collapsed and most of its roof.
