Stravomytis Cave

Cave Stratomytis or Lykastos Cave is located north of the settlement Karnari, just at the point where the solid limestone of Jiouhtas Mount meets the soil grounds of the region. It is very easily accessible via a short path and its location is easy found, as its numerous entrances can be seen from afar.

The cave actually consists of a complex network of galleries, which exceed the length of 400 meters. The cave was, like the nearby Chosto Nero cave , a religious cave in the Minoan era.

Inside the cave there is a limestone sacrificial alter or throne of the Geometric period (900 BC-650 BC). 15 large food storage jars and an iron blade were also found, while everywhere we still meet shells dating from the Neolithic to the Minoan era. The cluster of galleries extends in at least three levels and in many places one has to be crouch to proceed to deeper areas.

Generally, it has no decoration except a few points in the upper-level central gallery. There are several bats in the galleries, while there are few points with water drops.
