Saint George church at Hymeftou

The wonderful location Hymeftou near the village Moni at province Malevizi houses the scenic church dedicated to Saint George (Agios Georgios)and the Holy Cross (Timios Stavros). This was the site of the monastery of the Holy Cross, which was a dependency of the monastery Kavallara at Korfes .

Indeed, east of the present church there are traces of an older church, and within 150m we meet a monk cell carved into the limestone. The site is located in a lush ravine with plane trees and there is a spring with cool potable water.

Indeed the site name Himeftou comes after the Latin word humectus meaning a wet and moist place .
