Panagia Church at Metaxochori

The almost deserted village of Metaxochori in the province of Viannos and the current Municipality of Ierapetra takes its name after Meletios Metaxakis , who served as Ecumenical Patriarch in the years 1921-1923 and Patriarch of Alexandria (1926-1935) and was born here. The previous name of the village was Parsas .

The village with this rich religious tradition hosts many churches. Among them are the Byzantine church of Saint George and the half-ruined church of the Panagia (Virgin Mary) dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary.
