The area in the current resort of Stalis , before the arrival of tourism, hosted the crops and pastures of Mochos residents. The residents of Mochos walked down to Stalis with their animals by crossing the steep and rugged mountain, as there were no roads like today.
The construction of modern footpaths, for that era, was something very useful and costly. During the First World War, Bulgarian war captives were brought to Crete to reconstruct the path connecting Stalis to Mohos.
Thus, they built a wider path with an average width of 2m, which for its time was a project of enormous importance. Of course, after the main road was built in the 20th century, the use of the trail virtually disappeared and now attracts only hikers.
The Bulgarian trail , as it still called today, starts from Stalis, ascends to the modern monastery of Axion Esti and ends at Mohos after about two hours of ascent. Initially we cross the highway at the height of Stalis by a footbridge, while at two more points we cross the road that climbs to Mohos.
As we go up to the altitude of about 400 meters, the view to the beaches of Stalis and Malia is really unique. This trail can be combined with the other trail that connects Malia to Mohos .
