Amourgella is a mountainous area of Psiloritis Mt north of Gergeri and Panasos . It is known in local history for the Battle of August 20, 1823 between the Turkish-Egyptian army of Hussein Bey and the rebels of Emmanuel Tobazis .

The battle between 12,000 Turk-Egyptians and 3,000 Christians resulted in a great defeat for the Cretans and paved the way for great destruction by the conquerors in the following months throughout Crete. According to the documents, 500 Muslims and 150 Greeks were killed in the battle.

Today there is a war memorial in the area, surrounded by a big wind farm. In the valley that forms in the area and ends in the reservoir of Gergeri , the church of Agia Kyriaki has been built, above a series of beautiful waterfalls.

Access is possible via a bad dirt road that connects Gergeri with the wind farm.
