Island Overview
A blanket of cloud sits over Crete today, 20 October 2026, but do not let that discourage plans. No rain is expected anywhere on the island, temperatures reach a comfortable 21 to 25 degrees Celsius, and the sea remains warm and calm from coast to coast. October has settled into its quieter rhythm: the busy summer crowds are gone, conditions are agreeable, and the island is easy to explore at a measured pace.
North vs South
The south coast holds its warmth well into autumn. Ierapetra reaches a high of 24.7°C with an overnight low of 17.4°C, and Makrigialos follows closely at 24.2°C. These southern resorts feel decidedly Mediterranean even in late October. The north coast is milder by comparison. Heraklion tops out at 22.4°C but drops to 11°C overnight, so an extra layer for evenings is worth keeping close. Chania and Rethymno sit in between, with highs near 22 to 23°C and overnight lows around 13 to 14°C.
Mountains
Conditions in the White Mountains above Chania and on the Psiloritis massif near Rethymno will be notably cooler than coastal readings suggest. Cloud cover may thicken at altitude and visibility on exposed ridges could be limited. Hikers heading into the high ground should carry a windproof layer and allow extra time on descents.
Sea, Wind and UV
Wind speeds are light across the island, generally between 8 and 15 km/h. The northeast corner, around Agios Nikolaos and Elounda, sees the strongest gusts at 15 km/h, which remains gentle. Seas are exceptionally calm: wave heights range from just 6 centimetres at Rethymno to 30 centimetres at Sitia. Sea temperatures hold at 22 to 23°C along all coasts. The UV index peaks at around 5, which is moderate. Sunscreen and sunglasses remain advisable during midday hours even under an overcast sky.
Swim Verdict
Conditions favour swimming today. The sea is flat, water temperatures are comfortable at 22 to 23°C, and there is no meaningful swell anywhere on the island. The south coast beaches at Ierapetra and Makrigialos offer the warmest combination of air and water. The north coast is slightly cooler to the touch but remains fully swimmable for most visitors.
Practical Tip
The overcast sky diffuses sunlight without blocking UV, which catches many visitors off guard this time of year. Apply SPF 30 or higher before any time outdoors, particularly if you are on the water or at altitude. The soft, shadow-free light also makes today well suited to visiting exposed archaeological sites such as Knossos near Heraklion or the Minoan palace at Malia, where direct afternoon sun can be punishing in summer.
