Island Overview
Monday 19 October brings a uniformly grey sky to most of Crete. Every major town from Chania in the west to Sitia in the east sits under overcast cover, with Makrigialos on the south coast offering the one exception: partly cloudy conditions that allow some sunshine through. No rain is expected anywhere today, so the cloud layer is a visual nuisance rather than a practical obstacle. Daytime highs range from 20.8°C in Sitia to 23.1°C in Makrigialos, keeping conditions comfortable for sightseeing and outdoor activity.
North Coast vs South Coast
The south coast runs notably warmer than the north. Ierapetra reaches 23°C and Makrigialos 23.1°C, while Heraklion and Rethymno peak around 21.6 to 21.9°C. Overnight minimums tell a similar story: Malia holds 18.6°C at its lowest, Ierapetra 16.2°C, whereas Heraklion drops to 11.8°C. Anyone staying in the capital or further north should keep a light layer to hand for the evening. Chania and Rethymno sit in between, with minimums around 14 to 15°C.
The Mountains
At altitude, temperatures will be several degrees cooler than coastal readings. The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis massif above Rethymno are likely wrapped in low cloud today. Hikers heading to higher elevations should carry a waterproof layer and expect reduced visibility on upper trails. Mountain villages will feel noticeably cool after sundown.
Wind, Sea and UV
Wind is light to moderate across the island. The eastern end sees the highest gusts: Sitia at 17.6 km/h, Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda at 17.1 km/h. Chania and Makrigialos are nearly calm, both below 9 km/h. The sea is in excellent shape everywhere. Wave heights are negligible, ranging from 0.18 m off Rethymno to 0.26 m at a handful of locations. Sea temperatures remain warm at 22.4 to 23.1°C, with the south coast holding the highest readings. The UV index sits at a moderate 5 across the board. Sunscreen remains advisable, particularly between 11:00 and 15:00.
Swim Verdict
Conditions favour a swim. The water is flat, calm, and at 22 to 23°C, comfortably warm for mid-October. Overcast skies change none of that. Post-season beach crowds are thin, and the sea is in better shape than many summer days. There is no reason to stay out of the water today.
Practical Tip for the Day
If you want the best combination of warmth and partial sunshine, head to Makrigialos on the south coast. It is the only location reporting partly cloudy rather than full overcast, it posts the highest maximum temperature on the island at 23.1°C, and wind is minimal at 8.4 km/h. A straightforward choice for a late-season beach day.
