Island Overview
September 13 brings a warm, dry day across Crete with temperatures reaching the low-to-mid thirties in most locations. No rainfall is expected anywhere on the island. The main divide today is in sky conditions: the west holds the clearest skies, while the east and south start the day under fog or thick cloud that may persist through the afternoon.
North Coast vs South Coast
On the north coast, Chania has the best skies of the day with mainly clear conditions and a high of 32.9°C. Rethymno sees a mix of sun and cloud, reaching 32.4°C. Heraklion wakes to morning fog, which is typical for early autumn and usually lifts by mid-morning, leaving a warm afternoon at 32.6°C. Further east, Hersonissos and Malia share overcast conditions with highs around 32.7 to 33°C and overnight lows staying above 21°C.
The south coast is uniformly overcast today. Ierapetra, Sitia, and Makrigialos all sit under cloud, with temperatures ranging from 30.2 to 32.7°C. Ierapetra records the mildest daytime high at 30.2°C but the warmest overnight low on the island at 24.3°C, reflecting its sheltered position facing the Libyan Sea.
Eastern Crete
Agios Nikolaos and Elounda start the day under fog yet record the hottest highs on the island at 33.5°C and 33.6°C respectively. Once the fog clears, typically by late morning in these sheltered bays, conditions turn sunny and calm. Winds here are the lightest on the island at 12 km/h, and wave heights drop to just 0.32 to 0.38 m.
Mountain Conditions
The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis massif inland from Rethymno will run 8 to 12 degrees cooler than coastal readings. Higher peaks may hold cloud for much of the day. Hikers setting out early will find fresh air and good visibility on the lower trails.
Sea, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures range from 26.0°C off Sitia to 26.8°C off Heraklion, comfortably warm for late-season swimming. Wave heights are minimal across the island, peaking at 0.74 m off Chania and falling to 0.32 m at Agios Nikolaos and Makrigialos. Winds are light to moderate, reaching 19.7 km/h in Chania and dropping below 11 km/h in the southeast. The UV index is 7 at all locations, rated high.
Swim Verdict
All coastal areas are suitable for swimming today. Calm seas, warm water and light winds make for a comfortable beach day from Chania to Sitia. The clearest overhead conditions are along the west and central north coast; eastern bays will clear of fog by late morning.
Practical Tip
Despite thick cloud across the south and east, a UV index of 7 means meaningful exposure remains possible through overcast skies. Apply SPF 30 or higher before heading to the beach, even where the sun is not directly visible.
