These informal dump sites, described by the managing director of ANAKEM (the regional waste management authority) as "the new generation of landfills," are appearing on roadsides, rural land, and coastal areas as builders and contractors dispose of debris without using licensed facilities. Greek law requires construction waste to be taken to approved collection points, but enforcement remains weak. While these sites pose no immediate safety risk to tourists, they can affect the appearance of scenic routes and hiking areas.
