Zurück zu NachrichtenOperation "Lagocephalus" is an ongoing effort in Crete to address the growing presence of the lagocephalus, an invasive and highly toxic pufferfish species spreading through Mediterranean waters. A local fisherman recently caught an 18 kg specimen off Crete, highlighting the scale of the problem. Authorities and fishing communities warn that Crete is currently unprepared for organized culling efforts, despite available EU subsidies to fund predation programs. The lagocephalus is extremely dangerous: its flesh, skin, and organs contain tetrodotoxin, a potent poison with no antidote. Tourists visiting Crete should never purchase or consume this fish from unverified sources. It cannot legally be sold for human consumption in Greece. If you see it offered at markets or tavernas, do not eat it and consider reporting it to local health authorities.
