Sfakaki beach

Sfakaki beach is located about 11 kilometers east of Rethymno , right after Pigianos Kambos . It forms part of the long stretch of Rethymno Bay and is renowned for its golden fine sand and crystal-clear shallow waters, although it is often affected by northern winds that bring waves.

The shoreline offers both organized sections with sunbeds, umbrellas, cafés, and restaurants, as well as quieter spots for those seeking more tranquility. The environmental importance of the area is significant: from May to September, loggerhead sea turtles ( Caretta caretta ) choose this coast for nesting.

In selected parts of the beach, special markings protect the nests, giving visitors a rare opportunity to witness the delicate coexistence between humans and wildlife. The location of the beach makes it ideal for exploring the wider region: about 12 kilometers to the south lies the historic Arkadi Monastery , a symbol of resistance against Ottoman rule, while to the north and east visitors can discover picturesque villages such as Prinos .
