Saint John the Theologian church at Armeni

The single-nave arched church of Saint John the Theologian (Agios Ioannis Theologos) is located in the central square of the village Armeni , province Apokoronas. The church was built in the 16th century on the site of an older 13th-century domed temple, which in turn was built on the site of the central aisle of a 6th-century Early Christian basilica .

The basilica probably continues below the main road and the adjancent building. From the 13th century temple, walls are preserved at a height of about 2 meters.

From the few traces of fresco decoration there are sections of hierarchs in the sanctuary. Underneath the floor there are tombs and architectural parts of the Early Christian Basilica.

Traces from the mosaic floor of the Early Christian temple have also been found, with patterns of wheels and peacocks resembling the patterns in the basilica of Almyrida .
