Die Geschichte lesen

The fortress of Rokka is built on the steep hill of Trouli above the village of Rokka in the province of Kissamos . It is a fortress of the Byzantine period that was probably built after the liberation of Crete by Nicephorus Phocas in 961 at the site of a Roman fort.

The fortress does not seem to have been used in a subsequent period, that is, during the Venetian or Ottoman domination. Despite its strategic location that oversees the northern coast and a large inland area, it seems that the difficulty of approaching the summit has been the main reason for its desolation since the 13th century.

Ascent to the fortress is quite painful because of the steep slope. There are still few traces of the castle, such as ruins of the Byzantine settlement, cisterns, walls and various carvings.
