Die Geschichte lesen

The martyr village Kakopetros at Kissamos province is one of the most beautiful and green villages of the prefecture of Chania. Like all the villages of the area it consists of many distinct neighborhoods (Tsichliana, Seli, Micheliana, Berethiana, Metohi, Sholio, Papadiana, Chatziana, Ganiana, Kotsyfiana and Pontikou Platanos.

The neighborhoods of the village are crossed by the rugged canyon Kakopetros. Chestnut trees, plane trees, olive trees and many other trees literally cover every inch of land in the village and there are quite many small streams and springs of running water to irrigate the land.

The village's name comes from the bad (kakos) and stone (petra) because it is really rocky. Kakopetros was present in all the revolutionary struggles of Crete against various invaders and paid for this.

Particularly during the German occupation, the occupiers showed incredible brutality against the locals and there were mass executions of unarmed locals, even women with babies, in 1941, 1943 and in 1944. The village has been declared as a martyr and there are two memorials.

No justice has been placed for these war crimes in Kakopetros till today.
