Grambela olive tree

This olive tree of Grambela has been declared by the Association of Cretan Olive Municipalities as a natural monument because of shape, relief trunk and its connection with historical events. It is located at position Anisaraki , by Kandanos , where there are dozens of other ancient olive trees.

Its variety is called mastoid and is grafted on a rootstock of a wild olive tree. The trunk has a very large cavity in which the Christians found refuge during the Ottoman rule (1866-1897 revolutions), but also during the German Occupation.
