Gionas plane tree

The monumental p;lane tree of Gionas is located inside the monastery of Saint John Giona and it is interested to know that it is regarded the unique plane tree in the peninsula of Rodopos , which is an arid, dry and inhospitable region. According to tradition, once a hermit brought a branch of the plane tree from Nopigia and stopped tired of the hot sun at this point; he prayed to Saint John to grow this branch and then a tree started growing.

It is said that a weird phenomenon takes place here, as the leafs of the plane tree are from the other side than usual.
