Saint Panteleimon Church at Houdetsi

Just outside the village Houdetsi and very close to the archaeological site of Vathypetro we meet the cavernous church of St. Panteleimon (Pantaleon) .

It is built on a slope of an area called Thergia with amazing views to the valleys of the northern Heraklion and the sacred mountain of Youchtas . Saint Panteleimon nave is carved into the soft limestone.

The religious use of this site starts in ancient times and continues until today. Previously the exterior of the temple hosted many ancient children's graves.

Saint Panteleimon feast takes place on July 27. Apart from the temple, the site is used for the cultural events that start for the first week of August in Houdetsi festival .
