Island Overview
A lid of cloud sits across Crete today, keeping highs between 20 and 22 degrees Celsius from Chania to the eastern tip at Sitia. Lows this morning ranged from 13 degrees in Heraklion to 18 degrees in Malia, a reminder that autumn nights are shortening the warm window. No meaningful rain is expected anywhere on the island; Hersonissos and Malia recorded traces overnight (0.1 to 0.2 mm) but roads and beaches are dry and none of that is forecast to continue.
North Coast vs South Coast
The contrast today is less about temperature and more about wind. The north coast from Chania to Heraklion stays relatively settled, with gusts topping out at 18 to 20 km/h. The eastern arc from Agios Nikolaos through Elounda, Sitia, and Makrigialos tells a different story: winds reach 25 km/h at Agios Nikolaos and Elounda, climb to 32 km/h at Sitia, and peak at 40 km/h in Ierapetra. The south-facing shores of Ierapetra and Makrigialos benefit from topographic shelter that keeps wave heights low at 0.4 to 0.6 metres despite those gusts.
Mountain Zones
Above 1,000 metres, the White Mountains behind Chania and the Psiloritis massif above Rethymno will be noticeably cooler than the coast. Hikers heading toward the Samaria gorge area or the Nida plateau should bring a mid-layer; temperatures at altitude could reach single figures by late afternoon under this overcast pattern. The olive harvest is underway in many foothill villages, which makes for good driving through the interior.
Sea, Wind and UV
Sea surface temperatures hold at 22.6 to 23.3 degrees Celsius, comfortably above the 20-degree threshold most swimmers find acceptable. UV peaks at index 5 (moderate) around midday; the cloud cover reduces actual exposure somewhat, but sunscreen remains advisable between 11:00 and 15:00. Wave heights on the open north coast run between 1.5 and 2 metres, producing rough surf on exposed beaches.
Swim Verdict
Swimming is viable island-wide, with a clear split by location. North-coast and open-east beaches face 1.5 to 2 metre swells that will push and pull in the shallows; confident swimmers will manage but it is not a day for casual paddling near the waterline with children. The sheltered southern beaches around Ierapetra and Makrigialos are the better choice for families, with wave heights under 0.7 metres and sea temperatures above 23 degrees.
Practical Tip
Winds intensify sharply as you drive east from Heraklion along the E75. High-sided vehicles and motorcycles should allow extra time and caution on exposed sections near Malia and beyond. For everyone else, today suits inland exploration well: gorge trails are cool and uncrowded in mid-October, and the archaeological museum in Heraklion will be far quieter than in peak season.
