Island Overview
A thick blanket of cloud sits over Crete on Sunday 21 September, but do not let the grey skies mislead you: no rain is forecast anywhere on the island. All ten monitored locations record zero precipitation, and temperatures remain comfortably warm, with afternoon highs ranging from 25°C in Sitia to nearly 29°C in Elounda. This is classic late-September Crete, summer warmth persisting under an autumn sky.
North Coast vs South Coast
The north coast from Chania to Hersonissos sees highs of 26 to 28°C with moderate winds. Heraklion reaches gusts of 24 km/h, while Hersonissos and Malia sit around 21 km/h, pushing waves to roughly 1 metre along the central north shore. Chania is the calmest of the northern cities today, with wind peaking at just 10 km/h and waves staying below 0.8 metres.
The south coast tells a quieter story. Ierapetra records the island's warmest overnight minimum at nearly 24°C, and its waves barely break the surface at 0.2 metres. Makrigialos is equally sheltered with 0.26-metre swells. Both towns offer the most comfortable sea conditions of the day.
East Coast: Watch the Wind
The eastern tip of the island carries today's strongest gusts. Sitia tops the forecast at 34 km/h, generating the highest waves on the island at 1.16 metres. Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda both reach 28 km/h, with wave heights around 1 metre. These are manageable conditions for experienced swimmers and most boats, but exposed east-facing beaches near Sitia will have a noticeable chop.
The Interior and High Peaks
Cloud cover will be dense over the Lefka Ori in the west and Psiloritis in the centre. Temperatures at altitude will run several degrees below the coast. Hikers heading out today should pack an extra layer and expect reduced visibility on the higher trails.
UV Levels and Sea Temperature
Despite the overcast sky, UV indices across the island range from 6.6 to 6.9, placing them firmly in the high category. Cloud cover scatters but does not meaningfully block UV radiation, so sun protection remains necessary. Sea temperatures are still excellent for late September, from 25.3°C near Sitia and Makrigialos up to 26.4°C off Heraklion.
Swim Verdict
Swimming conditions are good to excellent across most of the island. The south coast at Ierapetra and Makrigialos offers the flattest, warmest water of the day. The north-central coast around Heraklion, Hersonissos, and Malia has moderate wave action around 1 metre, which is fine for most adults but worth bearing in mind with young children. Avoid open-water swimming from exposed east-facing beaches near Sitia, where 34 km/h winds and 1.16-metre swells will make conditions uncomfortable.
Practical Tip for Today
The grey sky is today's main catch. A UV index of 6 to 7 produces none of the obvious solar glare of a clear day, but it will still burn unprotected skin within the hour. Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher before heading to the beach and reapply after every swim. The cloud provides shade, not protection.
