Crete divides into two distinct weather zones on 16 September 2026. A low-pressure system pushing in from the west is driving thunderstorms and meaningful rainfall across western and central regions, while the eastern third of the island holds drier, warmer conditions under heavy overcast skies.
Island Overview
This is a day to check local conditions before committing to plans. The storm front runs roughly east of Heraklion: the west bears the heaviest weather, the centre is mixed, and the east stays largely dry. Temperatures span from 22.5°C in Chania to 26.2°C at Makrigialos on the south coast, unremarkable for mid-September but pleasant where the sun breaks through.
North Coast vs South Coast
The north coast takes the worst of it. Chania records 8.3 mm of expected rainfall under a full thunderstorm, followed by Rethymno at 8.0 mm. Hersonissos and Malia are also under thunderstorm conditions with around 4 mm of rain each. Heraklion sits at the storm edge with lighter showers and roughly 3 mm. Further east, Ag. Nikolaos and Elounda are overcast but essentially dry at 0.1 mm.
The south coast is noticeably calmer. Ierapetra posts a maximum of 25.9°C, Makrigialos reaches 26.2°C, and both see only light shower activity with under 1.5 mm of rain. Sitia in the far northeast is dry with just 0.4 mm under an overcast sky.
Mountain Conditions
The White Mountains above Chania and Psiloritis above Rethymno are fully cloud-wrapped today. Visibility on mountain roads will be reduced during storm cells, and gorge walks in the western ranges should be postponed. The Lasithi Plateau and eastern ranges are calmer but remain under heavy overcast.
Sea, Wind and UV
Sea temperatures remain solidly warm at 25.9 to 26.7°C across the entire island. Waves are mostly gentle, under 0.6 m at all coastal points except Chania where storm swell has built to 1.06 m. Winds are light to moderate, between 9 and 17 km/h. UV runs at moderate levels island-wide, between 3 and 6.7, with the higher readings occurring in the west between storm breaks.
Swim Verdict
The east coast offers the safest and most pleasant bathing conditions today. Elounda, Ag. Nikolaos, Sitia, Ierapetra and Makrigialos all have calm water above 26°C and no active electrical storm risk. At Chania, Rethymno, Hersonissos and Malia, leave the water immediately if you hear thunder. Do not swim during an active thunderstorm anywhere on the island.
Tip of the Day
If your plans are flexible, head east. The corridor from Elounda down through Ierapetra to Makrigialos combines the warmest temperatures, the lowest rainfall, and the calmest seas on the island today. Pack a light layer regardless: an overcast sky masks UV exposure, and moderate UV levels are enough to burn over a long afternoon on the water.
