Island Overview
A classic late-summer pattern settles over Crete on 19 August 2026. Temperatures reach 28 to 29°C across all ten reporting stations, no rain is expected anywhere on the island, and winds stay light throughout the day. Skies range from clear in the west to partly cloudy in the east, with one notable exception at Heraklion this morning.
North and South Coast
Heraklion starts the day under fog. Visitors at Heraklion International Airport and drivers on the coastal road should allow a few extra minutes during the early hours; the fog is expected to thin as the morning progresses. Further west, Chania reports mainly clear skies and a high of 29.4°C, while Rethymno enjoys a fully clear sky and reaches 28.7°C.
The south coast retains overnight heat more effectively than the north. Ierapetra, sheltered by the Dikti range, records a minimum of 24.0°C, the highest overnight reading on the island, with a daytime high of 27.7°C under partly cloudy skies. Makrigialos, a few kilometres to the east, climbs to 29.1°C with a mild overnight low of 22.9°C.
Mountain Areas
The White Mountains above Chania and Mount Psiloritis above Rethymno will be noticeably cooler at elevation, with temperatures dropping several degrees per 1,000 metres of altitude. Hikers tackling gorge routes or summit trails should carry at least two litres of water per person and pack a light layer for the early morning hours.
Sea State, Wind and UV
Sea surface temperatures range from 25.6°C at Sitia to 26.8°C at Heraklion, well above any comfortable swimming threshold. Wave heights are minimal across the board: the highest reading is 0.46 metres at Ierapetra, and most northern beaches are seeing 0.2 metres or less. Winds peak at 13.7 km/h in Heraklion and fall as low as 9.9 km/h around Hersonissos and Malia, calm enough for paddleboarding and kayaking.
The UV index reaches 7.75 to 8.0 across the island, placing it firmly in the high category. Apply SPF 30 or above before going out and reapply every two hours, particularly between 11 am and 4 pm.
Swim Verdict
Swimming conditions are excellent island-wide. Water is warm, waves are negligible, and there is no swell risk at any coastal location today. The calmest water is found around Ag. Nikolaos (0.14 m), Elounda (0.18 m), and Rethymno (0.20 m). Ierapetra (0.46 m) and Makrigialos (0.42 m) see the most movement on the south coast, still well within comfortable limits for most swimmers.
Practical Tip for the Day
If you are based in or passing through Heraklion, wait until mid-morning before heading to the beach to allow the fog to clear. Once it lifts, the stretch from Hersonissos to Malia offers clear skies, calm sea, and water sitting at 26.6°C. That combination is hard to improve on for a full day at the coast.
