Island Overview
A classic late-July day settles over Crete on 29 July 2026. Skies are clear from Chania to Sitia, temperatures climb to 31 to 32°C across most of the island, and no rain is expected anywhere. The main story today is wind: the meltemi is running hard along the south coast while the north stays comparatively settled.
North vs South
The northern coast from Chania to Hersonissos and Malia sees moderate winds of 22 to 31 km/h, with waves reaching 1.6 to 1.8 m at exposed points. Sea temperatures hold at around 27°C between Heraklion and Rethymno. Elounda and Ag. Nikolaos in the northeast peak at 32°C with gusts up to 37 km/h.
The south coast is a different situation. Ierapetra is recording gusts to 59.5 km/h and Makrigialos to 52 km/h, placing both locations firmly in Beaufort 7 territory. Paradoxically, those same winds press the Libyan Sea relatively flat: wave heights there stay below 1.1 m, the calmest on the island today. If you can tolerate the wind on the sand, the water entry itself is smoother than on the north coast.
The Mountains
The White Mountains above Chania and Mount Psiloritis in the central range act as a partial barrier, channelling the meltemi and keeping the northern foothills noticeably cooler than the shore. Hikers heading to higher elevations will find temperatures 5 to 8°C below coastal readings, though wind exposure increases sharply above 1,000 m.
Sea State, Wind and UV
UV index peaks at 8.2 to 8.5 across all locations today, firmly in the very high band. Full sun protection is essential from around 10:00 to 17:00. Sea temperatures range from 25.4°C at Makrigialos to 27.3°C at Rethymno, making the water genuinely comfortable for extended swims where conditions allow.
Swim Verdict
North coast beaches from Chania to Hersonissos offer the best swimming conditions today, with 27°C water and waves that are manageable outside of exposed headlands. The northeast bays around Elounda are warm but expect brisk gusts on the beach. On the south coast, seek out sheltered coves rather than open stretches. The sea surface is flat, but sustained winds of 50 to 60 km/h make open beach exposure uncomfortable and raise sand considerably.
Practical Tip for Today
Get your beach time in before midday. By early afternoon the meltemi strengthens along the south coast and UV peaks island-wide. A morning session gives you calmer wind, cooler sand, and lower UV exposure. Save the afternoon for shaded tavernas, a visit to a local archaeological site, or a drive up into the cooler mountain villages inland.
