Island Overview
Crete opens 29 June 2026 under clear to mainly clear skies from Chania in the west to Sitia in the east. No precipitation is forecast anywhere on the island. It is a textbook late-June day: strong sun, a warm sea and a light-to-moderate breeze providing relief on most beaches.
North Coast vs South Coast
The north coast runs noticeably cooler today. Chania tops out at 27.0°C and Rethymno at 27.2°C, while Hersonissos reaches 28.4°C and Heraklion 29.8°C. Night-time lows drop to the low twenties across the north, keeping evenings comfortable. The south coast tells a different story. Makrigialos leads the island at 31.5°C with an overnight low of 25.5°C, and Ierapetra peaks at 30.2°C with a minimum of 26.1°C. Visitors on the south coast should expect evenings that stay firmly warm rather than cooling off.
Mountain Conditions
No summit data is included today, but the White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis massif above Rethymno will sit roughly 8 to 12°C below the coastal readings at elevation. Hikers should plan an early start before 09:00, carry at least two litres of water per person and apply sunscreen to all exposed skin given the island-wide UV levels.
Sea State, Wind and UV
The Libyan Sea on the south coast is exceptionally calm today. Maximum wave heights of 0.16 m at Makrigialos and 0.18 m at Ierapetra mean near-flat water. The Cretan Sea on the north coast is livelier, with waves peaking at 1.06 m in Chania and 0.9 m at Heraklion, Rethymno and Hersonissos. All readings sit well within safe swimming range. Sea temperatures are uniformly warm across the island, from 24.0°C at Sitia to 25.7°C at Rethymno.
Winds are light to moderate. The strongest gusts reach 20.8 km/h at Heraklion and 20.1 km/h at Makrigialos, offering useful cooling on otherwise hot beaches. Most other stations record below 15 km/h. UV index peaks between 8.35 and 8.7 island-wide, placing the day firmly in the Very High band. Unprotected skin can burn in under 20 minutes around midday.
Swim Verdict
Conditions are excellent for swimming on all coasts. Sea temperatures in the mid-twenties, minimal swell and good visibility make for ideal bathing. Families with young children or anyone wanting paddleboard-flat water should favour the south coast beaches around Makrigialos and Ierapetra, where the sea is virtually undisturbed today.
Practical Tip for the Day
UV peaks between 11:00 and 15:00. Apply SPF 30 or higher before leaving your accommodation and reapply after every swim. A wide-brim hat and a midday break in the shade are the most effective tools against sunburn on a day like this.
