Island overview
Clear skies cover all of Crete on 10 June 2026. There is no rain and no significant cloud from Chania to Sitia. Temperatures range from 26.3°C at Sitia to 31.6°C at Agios Nikolaos and Elounda in the far east. The UV index reaches 8.5 across most of the island, placing today firmly in the high category from first light.
North coast versus south coast
The north coast is pleasant but noticeably breezier than the rest of the island. Heraklion records the strongest wind of the day at 24.7 km/h, with Hersonissos and Malia close behind at 18.8 km/h. Daytime highs along the north shore range from 26.8°C at Rethymno to 29°C at Heraklion. Sea temperatures sit between 23.7°C and 23.9°C, and waves stay below 0.7 m throughout.
The south coast is calmer and warmer overnight. Ierapetra and Makrigialos see winds of only 12 to 13 km/h and carry the flattest water on the island, with wave heights at or below 0.36 m. Night minimums on the south coast stay above 23°C, which means little relief from the heat after dark. The Gulf of Mirabello, anchored by Agios Nikolaos and Elounda both peaking at 31.6°C, is the warmest area of Crete today.
Mountains
The White Mountains above Chania and the Psiloritis range are fully clear. Visibility from mountain roads is excellent. There are no weather-related hazards for hikers today; standard advice on water, footwear and sun cover applies at altitude.
Sea state, wind and UV
Sea temperatures range from 22.9°C at Sitia to 24.2°C at Rethymno. Wave heights are small to very small island-wide: 0.78 m near Sitia and 0.72 m at Elounda represent the upper end, while Makrigialos (0.34 m) and Ierapetra (0.36 m) are barely above flat calm. Wind is the main variable separating one coast from another; the north and east faces of the island are breezier, the south coast sheltered.
Swim verdict
Good conditions for swimming across the whole island. Water temperatures are comfortable at 23 to 24°C, wave heights pose no hazard anywhere, and visibility in the water is excellent under cloudless skies. The most sheltered beaches are on the south coast between Ierapetra and Makrigialos.
Practical tip for the day
UV is the one factor that demands real attention today. With indices between 8.25 and 8.55, the most intense solar radiation runs from 11:00 to 15:00. Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher before leaving your accommodation and reapply after every swim. A hat and a light cover-up during the midday hours will reduce fatigue and sunburn risk considerably, particularly for children and fair-skinned visitors.
