Minor Earthquake Strikes Far Eastern Crete

A minor magnitude 2.9 earthquake occurred approximately 36 kilometres east of Zakros, in the far eastern tip of Crete, on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at 3:11 am local time (GMT+3). Earthquakes of this size are common in the eastern Mediterranean region and are generally not felt by most people, or only perceived as a very slight tremor. At this magnitude, no damage to buildings or infrastructure is expected, and there is no safety concern for visitors. Tourists staying in or planning to visit the Zakros area, including the famous Minoan palace site and Kato Zakros beach, can continue their plans as normal. No travel disruptions have been reported.
