Toxic Pufferfish Crisis Spirals Out of Control in Crete

Friday, 26 June 2026/SourceFlashnews/1 min read
The silver-cheeked toadfish (Lagocephalus sceleratus), a highly toxic invasive species, has spread widely across Cretan waters and the situation is described as out of control. The fish, which originated in the Red Sea and entered the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal, has proliferated due to the absence of natural predators. Swimmers and snorkelers should avoid touching or handling any unfamiliar fish, particularly puffed or round-bodied specimens found near the shore or in fishing nets. The fish is extremely poisonous if consumed and its spines can cause injury. Fishermen across Crete are reporting growing numbers in their catches. Authorities have introduced a compensation scheme for fishermen who remove the species, though it has been criticized for arriving late. Visitors should purchase fish only from trusted, licensed establishments and report any sightings to local authorities.
