Back to newsDivers operating in the Gulf of Messara, on the southern coast of Crete, located and removed 67 lagocephalus fish from the waters. The lagocephalus, also known as the silver-cheeked toadfish, is an invasive species that has spread across the Mediterranean from the Red Sea. It poses a serious health risk because its flesh and organs contain tetrodotoxin, a powerful poison with no known antidote. Local authorities and fishing organizations have been conducting removal operations to protect both marine ecosystems and public safety. Tourists visiting beaches and fish markets along the southern coast should be aware that this fish is strictly prohibited for consumption in Greece. If you encounter it at sea or on a market stall, do not handle or eat it. Only purchase seafood from licensed, reputable vendors.
