Extreme Heat Wave and Meltemi Winds Hit Crete, Tourists Advised

Monday, 29 June 2026/SourceGoogle News/1 min read
Crete is experiencing high temperatures and strong meltemi winds this Monday, June 29. The eastern part of the island is seeing some of the hottest conditions, with Agios Nikolaos reaching 31°C. The meltemi, a dry northerly wind common in summer, is blowing at increased intensity across the island. Tourists should stay well hydrated and limit outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours, typically between 1pm and 5pm. The strong winds may affect boat tours, ferry connections, and water sports, so check with operators before heading out. Lightweight, breathable clothing and sunscreen are essential. Coastal areas will feel cooler due to the breeze, making beaches a reasonable choice if winds are manageable. Inland areas and gorges such as Samaria may feel more sheltered but hotter.
