Heraklion warehouse fire activates emergency alert, impacts area

A large fire broke out at a lumber warehouse in Agios Ioannis Hostos, on the outskirts of Heraklion, prompting authorities to activate the emergency alert system 112. Thick smoke spread across the surrounding area, prompting local authorities to advise residents to remain indoors with doors and windows shut until the situation is brought under control. Fire brigades responded to the scene. Tourists staying in or passing through the greater Heraklion area should be aware of possible reduced visibility and air quality issues in the vicinity. Avoid the Agios Ioannis Hostos area until authorities confirm the fire is extinguished and smoke has cleared. Monitor local emergency channels and follow any instructions issued via the 112 alert system. No injuries have been reported at this stage.
