Matala: Crete's Historic Beach Where Joni Mitchell and Artists Gathered

Saturday, 2 May 2026/Greek Reporter/1
Matala is a small coastal village on the southern shore of Crete, roughly 75 kilometers south of Heraklion. The village is best known for its ancient sandstone cliffs riddled with caves, which were used as tombs in Roman times and later became home to a community of international travelers and artists during the 1960s and early 1970s. Figures including Joni Mitchell are said to have stayed here. Today, Matala attracts visitors drawn to its sandy beach, clear waters, and countercultural history. The caves are open to visitors during daylight hours and can be explored on foot. The village hosts an annual Matala Beach Festival celebrating its hippie heritage, typically held in June. Accommodation and dining options are available locally, and the village is accessible by car or bus from Heraklion and Rethymno.
