Back to newsPrincess Anne, the Princess Royal, has begun an official visit to Crete with a ceremony at the RAF Memorial in Maleme, a village in western Crete near Chania. The memorial commemorates Allied airmen and soldiers who fought during the Battle of Crete in May 1941, one of the most significant Second World War engagements in the Mediterranean. Maleme is home to the German War Cemetery and sits close to the former airfield that was central to the battle. The visit highlights the historical ties between Britain and Crete. Tourists interested in Second World War history can visit the Maleme area, which includes the cemetery and nearby museum at Platanias. The site is accessible by car from Chania city center, approximately 16 kilometers to the west along the northern coastal road.
