Back to newsKontomari, a small village near Chania in western Crete, is the subject of a new poetic work titled "Olive Tree of Memory, Funeral Wind." The piece serves as a literary tribute to the village's place in Cretan and European history. On June 2, 1941, Kontomari became the site of the first mass execution of civilians in occupied Western Europe, when German paratroopers shot 23 men in reprisal for local resistance during the Battle of Crete. The village has since become a symbol of Cretan defiance and sacrifice. Visitors to the Chania region can pay their respects at the memorial site in Kontomari, located approximately 12 kilometers southeast of Chania city. The Battle of Crete Museum in Chania also provides broader historical context for those wishing to understand the island's wartime experience.
