A striking satellite image captured the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) in western Crete still covered in snow this May, an unusual sight for late spring. The range, which peaks at 2,453 metres, retains its snowpack well into the warmer months due to its elevation. While the coastline below enjoys warm temperatures ideal for swimming and sightseeing, hikers planning to explore the high-altitude trails of the Lefka Ori should be prepared for cold conditions, icy patches, and rapidly changing weather. The E4 long-distance path and routes toward the Samaria Gorge area pass through these mountains. Visitors heading into the mountains are advised to carry warm layers, waterproof gear, and check local trail conditions before setting out. The Samaria Gorge itself, one of Crete's most popular hikes, typically opens in May and conditions at the start point can be cool.
