The species has been present in the Mediterranean for several years and while it is highly toxic if eaten, it poses no direct threat to swimmers or beachgoers. Authorities stress that the risk lies entirely in consumption, not contact. Fishermen are advised to discard any pufferfish caught and never to sell or serve it. Tourists should be aware that this fish is strictly banned from sale and should never appear on a restaurant menu. If you see it offered anywhere, do not order it. There is no reason to avoid the sea. Beaches and water activities remain completely safe.
