Snow Still Blankets Crete's White Mountains in May

Tuesday, 5 May 2026/Flashnews/1
The White Mountains (Lefka Ori) in western Crete are still covered in snow this May, as confirmed by a striking satellite image. This seasonal phenomenon is not unusual for the range, which peaks above 2,400 metres, but the snowpack remains notably visible well into spring. For visitors, the contrast between snow-capped summits and warm coastal beaches below is a remarkable sight unique to this time of year. Hikers planning to trek the Samaria Gorge or explore higher elevations should be aware that trails above 1,500 metres may still have icy or slippery sections. Sturdy footwear and layered clothing are strongly recommended. The gorge itself typically opens to the public in mid-April and remains accessible at lower altitudes, but conditions on upper paths should be checked locally before setting out.
