A geologist from the Natural History Museum of the University of Crete has stated that an earthquake above magnitude 7.0 cannot be ruled out for the island. Speaking to local radio station CRETAONE 102.3, the expert explained that Crete sits in one of the most seismically active zones in Europe, making large seismic events a realistic possibility rather than a remote scenario. For visitors, this is useful context rather than cause for alarm. Crete experiences frequent minor tremors that go largely unnoticed. In the event of a stronger earthquake, standard safety advice applies: move away from buildings and coastal areas, follow instructions from local authorities, and avoid using elevators.
