Back to newsEurope is experiencing record tourist numbers this summer, with popular destinations facing heat, overcrowding, and rising prices. Crete is among the affected regions, with peak season bringing higher accommodation rates, busy beaches, and longer wait times at major sites such as Knossos and Samaria Gorge. Travelers can reduce costs and avoid crowds by visiting popular beaches before 9am or after 5pm, booking restaurants away from harbor fronts, and exploring eastern Crete, which remains less saturated than Heraklion and Chania. Inland villages such as Zaros, Kritsa, and Anogia offer authentic experiences at lower prices. Hiring a car early is recommended as rental availability tightens in July and August. Staying hydrated, wearing sun protection, and avoiding midday outdoor activity during heat peaks are advised for visitor safety.
