Back to newsGreece's Minister of Tourism, Olga Kefalogianni, visited the mountain village of Anogia on Friday, May 22, where she toured the weaving workshop of local artisan Ermioni Kalomiri. Anogia, located in the Rethymno regional unit on the slopes of Mount Psiloritis, is one of Crete's most culturally significant villages, known for its centuries-old tradition of hand-woven textiles, distinctive music, and strong Cretan identity. The ministerial visit highlights growing official recognition of traditional crafts as part of Crete's cultural tourism offering. Visitors to Anogia can explore local workshops selling hand-woven rugs, clothing, and textiles directly from artisans. The village is approximately 50 km south of Heraklion, accessible by car via the Malevizi route, and pairs well with a visit to the nearby Ideon Cave, mythological birthplace of Zeus.
