Back to newsCrete has produced some of history's most influential figures, whose legacies are visible across the island today. Eleftherios Venizelos, born in Mournies near Chania, became one of Greece's greatest statesmen and transformed the country in the early 20th century. His home and tomb in Chania are open to visitors. Nikos Kazantzakis, author of Zorba the Greek, was born in Heraklion, where his museum and tomb on the Martinengo Bastion remain popular stops. Arthur Evans, the British archaeologist who excavated the Minoan palace at Knossos, revealed one of Europe's oldest civilizations to the world. Knossos, located 5 km south of Heraklion, is Crete's most visited archaeological site and open year-round. These figures shaped Greek politics, world literature, and our understanding of ancient history, all rooted in Cretan soil.
