Museum staff protest chronic understaffing during minister's Crete visit

Tuesday, 26 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
Staff and workers staged a protest outside the Heraklion Archaeological Museum ahead of a visit by Greek Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni. Demonstrators gathered with banners reading "No to understaffing of the Ministry of Culture" and "Mass hiring of permanent staff," calling on the government to address chronic personnel shortages at cultural sites across Greece. The Heraklion Archaeological Museum is one of Crete's most visited attractions, home to the world's largest collection of Minoan artifacts. While the protest did not close the museum, visitors should be aware that ongoing staffing disputes at Greek cultural institutions can occasionally affect opening hours or access to certain galleries. It is advisable to check the museum's official website or call ahead before your visit, particularly during periods of labor action. Admission is currently 15 euros for adults.
