Woman hospitalized after life-threatening snake bite in Crete

Tuesday, 26 May 2026/SourceCretaOne/1 min read
A woman from Agrinio was hospitalized for three days after being bitten by a snake while walking in the Kainourgío area. Her condition was described as life-threatening at the time of admission. Snake encounters, while uncommon, do occur in rural and semi-rural areas of Crete, particularly during warmer months. Visitors hiking or walking in countryside areas, olive groves, or rocky terrain are advised to wear closed shoes and long trousers, watch where they step, and avoid reaching into dense vegetation or under rocks. If bitten, seek medical attention immediately and keep the affected limb still and below heart level. Do not attempt to suck out venom or apply a tourniquet. Local hospitals and health centers (PEDY) are equipped to treat snake bites.
