Back to newsOn June 18, 2026, the Region of Crete and the Organization for the Development of Crete (OAK) signed a formal agreement in Omalos concerning the Omalos Reservoir project. The contract establishes a cooperative framework between the two bodies to advance development or management works related to the reservoir located on the Omalos plateau, in the White Mountains of western Crete. Omalos sits at approximately 1,050 meters elevation and serves as the main entry point for the Samaria Gorge, one of the most visited natural sites on the island. Water infrastructure investments in this area can support both local agricultural needs and the sustainability of the surrounding landscape. Visitors hiking the Samaria Gorge or exploring the White Mountains region should not expect immediate disruptions, though works associated with this agreement may affect access to certain areas in the coming months.
