Back to newsMonday, June 1 is Whit Monday (Holy Spirit Day), a public holiday in Greece. While it is not a mandatory day off for all workers, expect reduced services across Crete. Government offices and public services will be closed. Banks will not operate. Most large supermarkets and retail chains will follow Sunday trading hours, meaning shorter opening times or full closure depending on location. Smaller shops and tourist-facing businesses in resort areas typically remain open at the owner's discretion. Pharmacies will operate on a rotating on-call schedule. If you need to run errands, visit a bank, or access public administration, plan to do so before or after June 1. ATMs remain available throughout the island. Restaurants, cafes, and leisure services in tourist areas are not affected and will operate normally.
