The Samaria Gorge in Chania, western Crete, was closed without prior notice today due to strong winds. Authorities evacuated all 686 visitors already inside the gorge, and everyone exited safely by the afternoon. The closure was ordered by OFYPEKA, the Greek natural environment agency responsible for managing the national park. The gorge will reopen tomorrow and normal visiting hours will resume. If you have a hike planned in the coming days, conditions can change quickly, so check with your accommodation or the Samaria National Park office before setting out. The gorge is one of Europe's longest, stretching 16 kilometres, and emergencies inside can be serious. Always carry water, wear appropriate footwear, and follow any posted safety instructions or closures. Unplanned closures like this one are rare but do occur, particularly during periods of high wind.
