Back to newsBalos Lagoon, located on the Gramvousa Peninsula in western Crete, is gaining renewed international attention for its distinctive pink-tinged sand, caused by crushed shells and coral mixed into the shoreline. The lagoon sits within a protected natural landscape and offers shallow, turquoise waters where the Aegean and Cretan seas meet. The site is accessible by boat from Kissamos port, with ferries running regularly during summer, or by a 4WD vehicle followed by a 20-minute hike down to the beach. Visitor numbers have been increasing, so arriving early in the morning is recommended to secure space and avoid peak crowds. The area has no permanent facilities, so tourists should bring water, food, and sun protection. Swimming conditions are generally calm and safe, making it suitable for families. Entry to the beach is free.
